The first step to differentiation is knowing your students. Here are three fantastic free learning style assessment sites. I use them--or similar sites, at the beginning of each school year.
Learning style assessment (20 questions/easy w/graphed results)
http://www.edutopia.org/multiple-intelligences-assessment (It's an amazing free massive website!!)
learning styles on line.com This website is very informative but the test is lengthy and you need to provide an email address for the results. However the results are presented in a pie chart and there are many informative links that explain details about each as well as career paths, helpful learning style specific study habits and more.
After students take two of the above assessment, I indicate in the columns next to each students name, their preferred learning style(s) and their top intelligence (Gardner's Theory of multi-intelligences).
Student Activities to apply and understand the information. Students constructed a learning style grade level graph, which was a bar graph made of construction paper that we placed in an area on the white board, then discussed. Additionally, this year I had them work in small groups and they used their amazing technology & problem solving skills to create group graphs that reflect their top three strengths of intelligences.
We discuss why they need to know the information about their learning styles and (week 2) different ways we are smart. All of this applies to TESS; domain 1
Coordinator actively seeks knowledge of students’ levels of development and their backgrounds, cultures, skills, language proficiency, interests, and special needs from a variety of sources. This information is acquired for individual students.
Also meeting GT standards; Affective Development,
Students will develop habits of mind and an increased awareness of the skills of self and others in decision-making.
Content: Differentiation,
Students will have opportunities for content that is accelerated, involves greater depth and complexity, is authentic to the disciplines, and provides choices in study.
