Last year, the 2016-17 school year, the elementary level GT students explored the continents of the world. We ate various foods, listened to music, read books, poetry, viewed art and videos from diverse cultures representative of the continent we were studying. To deepen comprehension, inference, vocabulary as well as build creative & writing skills we read the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert C. O'Brien and compared and contrasted it with the cartoon that's based upon the book. Take a look at the video clips that represent a snap shot of these units of study.
For our field trip, we traveled to Memphis TN and toured the historic Peabody Hotel and then walked down to the Belz Museum of Judaic and Asian Art. We ate Chinese food for lunch in the Emperors room at Belz Museum. It was delicious! |
The 2016-17 Trumann
|
2016-17 Trumann High School GT ProgramGifted THS Students (9th-12th) field trip was also to Memphis TN where they visited the amazing Holocaust Memorial at the Belz Museum. We ate lunch at Hewey's which was in walking distance to the Museum.
The identified gifted students at the Trumann high school focused on WW2 and the Holocaust during our monthly meetings in 2016-17. We viewed several documentaries, especially interviews with concentration camp survivors and read books such as Balthazar retold and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, which provides an overview of the children's Oprah performed by Jewish children at the infamous Terezin concentration camp. GT students had many discussions and responded through art and writing. |
